Strong student-tutor relationships are at the heart of our work. We select only the most highly qualified tutors to work with our students. All of our tutors possess a bachelor’s degree (at a minimum) because we believe that teaching requires maturity and experience, in addition to enthusiasm and intellectual ability. Many have advanced degrees in their disciplines, and all demonstrate a passion for the subjects they teach. It is precisely this combination of subject expertise and teaching experience that makes our tutors so effective. Many of our tutors are seasoned classroom teachers; others have significant volunteer or out-of-classroom teaching experience. Meet the team.
Emmanuel C.
Emmanuel is a New Jersey native with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry from the University of South Florida and a minor in Psychology. After heavy involvement in undergraduate research, he realized that automation and artificial intelligence is the future of discovery. Upon graduating, Emmanuel attended Cornell Tech and received a Master’s of Engineering in Computer Science for that reason, and now works with a pharmaceutical startup designing compounds for cancer, COVID-19, and drug resistant bacteria.
He is delighted to help students with exam anxiety, homework, online modules, writing scientifically, competitive resumes, textbook breakdowns, research positions, and anything to do with drug discovery. To Emmanuel, research is central to any education. During his undergraduate career, Emmanuel worked on a variety of projects ranging from artificial protein synthesis against cancer to the study of magnetic waves to characterize chemical structure. These pursuits were fueled by his passion to understand the human mind and aid discoveries for mental illness treatments. Upon entering his master’s program, Emmanuel founded a platform “Anchor” that groups loved ones and fosters communication after invasive surgery to ensure safe recovery.
The ability to share knowledge is a complete joy, and Emmanuel has found himself in many STEM-oriented tutoring positions. Beginning with a class of twenty students teaching undergraduate chemistry peer sessions to mentoring a group of students through their science degrees, he has found that helping others appreciate science is a most rewarding investment. Emmanuel believes that fundamentals are integral to holistic understanding and enjoys boiling down complex topics into their most simple parts. As someone who nearly failed math in high school, then with correct coaching, became a machine learning researcher in the pharmaceutical world, he believes that all students have incredible potential.
When Emmanuel is not running simulations or thinking on synthetic chemistry routes, he is probably coding on his Raspberry Pi, learning to read music, working on his kickflip, playing with his kitty Luna, cooking, or practicing Jiu Jitsu. Part of the first generation to attend a four year university in his family, Emmanuel loves to bring strong academic practices to students who are not accustomed to the college routine and lifestyle. He understands that learning best occurs when complimented with a healthy routine and will discuss with his students to establish a schedule that fosters success.
Samantha Booth
Samantha earned a B.S. in Education from Boston University in 2010, and holds a Massachusetts teaching license in Secondary Mathematics and Special Education. In 2014, she earned an Ed.M from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education in Instructional Leadership.
Samantha has taught middle school math in Framingham, MA and served as the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction for math at an elementary school in Lawrence, MA. Samantha now serves as a Program Manager at Harvard’s Center for Education Policy Research. Her work focuses on measuring the specialized content knowledge necessary for teaching K-8 mathematics and supporting teachers and instructional coaches to improve the quality of math instruction.
Samantha’s years of experience in education have confirmed her belief that students should be actively engaged in their own learning. When working with students in mathematics, she ensures that they are doing the cognitively demanding work of understanding the meaning behind procedures. She encourages students to communicate their thoughts and reasoning to surface both understanding and misconceptions. Samantha’s deep content knowledge allows her to individualize her instruction based on student needs. She is passionate about giving students the confidence and tool set to encounter new problems and concepts.
As a tutor, Samantha works with students in middle school math, Algebra I, Geometry and executive function skills. When she is not working with students or facilitating professional development for teachers, she is spending time with her 1-year-old daughter at the beach or park.
