Wendy M.
Wendy spent many years teaching high school biology and coordinating student academic supports at a small independent high school in Boston. She then returned to graduate school, enrolling in the CAS Literacy and Language program at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, where she became steeped in recent findings in the science of literacy and language. Her goal from this training is to apply these findings when working with students at all levels, as they continue to develop their skills in reading comprehension, written expression, and related areas. Through her experiences working with students, Wendy recognized how profoundly challenges in reading comprehension and written expression impact student progress across the curriculum.
While teaching high school, Wendy worked one-on-one with students in weekly tutorials. Conversations during these meetings offered students opportunities to reflect on and develop learning strategies that were matched to their unique mix of strengths and challenges. With reflection, students began to incorporate more positive and expansive narratives about their developing skills, and became more confident about taking on new challenges.
When Wendy is not working with students, she works on her family’s organic vegetable farm, which offers many opportunities to observe and learn something new about the natural world.
